Online Notepad is a free, browser-based rich text editor designed for fast, distraction-free writing. It requires no downloads, no sign-ups, and no subscriptions. You get a full formatting toolbar with bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, lists, alignment options, adjustable font sizes, text colors, and highlights. Multiple documents live in a convenient sidebar so you can switch between projects instantly. Every change is auto-saved to your browser storage, and you can export to plain text, HTML, or Word-compatible DOCX at any time.
Open the page and begin typing in the editor area immediately. Use the formatting toolbar above the editor to style your text, adjust font size, or apply text and highlight colors. Create additional documents with the New button, rename them from the toolbar, and navigate between them using the sidebar list. When your document is ready, click Download to save it as .txt, .html, or .docx. You can also duplicate documents, clear content, or print directly from the browser window.
Yes, your documents are saved automatically — but entirely within your own browser's local storage, not on any external server. This means your notes persist between sessions on the same device and browser. However, because data lives in local storage, clearing your browser's site data or switching to a different browser or device will not carry your documents over. For documents you need to preserve long-term, use the Download button to export them as .txt, .html, or .docx files.
You can download your document in three formats: plain text (.txt), HTML (.html), and Word-compatible DOCX (.docx). The plain text export strips all formatting and gives you clean, portable content. The HTML export preserves your rich text formatting including bold, italic, and heading styles for use in web projects or email. The DOCX export is compatible with Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and LibreOffice Writer, making it the best choice when you need a fully formatted document that others can edit.
Once the page has loaded, the editor itself functions offline — you can continue typing, formatting, and managing your documents without an active connection because all processing happens in your browser. The page needs an internet connection to initially load fonts and external stylesheets. If you anticipate working in areas with poor connectivity, load the page while connected and it will remain usable throughout your session even if the connection drops afterward.
